Geschiedenis
Wijn maken behoort reeds eeuwen tot de cultuur van Mallorca. Het waren de Romeinen die de wijn naar Mallorca brachten al zo’n 125j voor Christus. Mallorca bezat zo’n 27OOO hectare wijngaard tot de phylloxera (druifluis) plaag over het eiland kwam en de wijngaarden grotendeels vervangen werden door amandelboomgaarden.
Dankzij toeristen met grote interesse voor kwaliteitswijn, volgende een opleving van de wijngaarden. De combinatie van de kalkrijke bodem, de zeelucht en een grote diversiteit in het landschap zorgt ervoor dat de wijnen van Mallorca een geheel eigen karakter hebben.
Waar Mallorca zo’n 30jaar geleden slechts 5 wijnbedrijven telde, zijn dat er nu wel zo’ 65 bodega’s geworden met meer dan 300 verschillende wijnen.
Er zijn 3 grote wijn regio’s op Mallorca:
1/ Binissalem
Binissalem is het bekendste wijngebied.
Voor de rode wijn worden hier de volgende druifsoorten geplant: Manto Negro, Callet, Tempranillo, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah en Merlot. Voor de witte wijn heeft men Moll, Parellada, Macabeo, Muscat en Chardonnay geplant.
Om het kwaliteitslabel ‘Binissalem DO’ te mogen gebruiken, moet de rode wijn minstens 30% Manto Negro bevatten en minstens 50% Moll of Muscat voor de witte wijnen.
Ongeveer 75% van de wijnproductie is rood.
2/Pla&Llevant
Het wijngebied Pla&Llevant is waar de eerste wijnen werden geproduceerd ten tijde van de Romeinen. Het gebied bevindt zich in het oosten van het eiland; van Algaida tot Felanitx tot Arta.
Voor de rode wijn worden hier de volgende druifsoorten geplant: Manto Negro, Callet, Fogoney, Tempranillo, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinot Noir en Merlot. Voor de witte wijn heeft men Premsal Blanc, Moll, Parellada, Macabeo, Muscat en Chardonnay geplant.
Er worden tevens semi-sprankelende wijnen en likeurs geproduceerd.
3/Tramuntana
De bergen van de Serra de Tramuntana bieden de wijngaarden in deze regio een microklimaat met unieke kwaliteitswijnen als gevolg.
De meest favoriete druifsoorten zijn Malvasia en Chardonnay voor de witte wijnen. Daarnaast gebruikt men hier eveneens Muscat, Moll, Parellada, macabeo en Sauvignon Blanc.
De rode wijnen worden gemaakt van Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Monastrell, Tempranillo, Callet en Manto Negro.
Ookal is er geen officiële DO klassificatie voor deze region, de kwaliteit staat onder strenge controle van de ‘Mallorca Regional Wine’ organisatie.
Bodegas
De wijnbedrijven/bodega’s bevinden zich meestal op uitzonderlijk mooie locaties. Het zijn vooral kleine familiebedrijven die volgens ambachtelijke traditie druiven verbouwen. Door de vaak intensieve en handmatige productiewijze gaan de wijnboeren hier vooral voor kwaliteit in plaats van voor kwantiteit.
Wist je dat zo’n 90% van de totale wijn productie van Mallorca op het eiland blijft? Slechts 10% wordt naar de EU geexporteerd waarbij meer dan de helft naar Duitsland gaat.
Dankzij Mallorca-Pure kwam hier verandering in. Sinds 2014 gaat een deel naar Nederland en België; en sinds 2015 ook naar Luxemburg dankzij de samenwerking met Mallorca.Lu. Neem een kijkje op onze website voor het huidige aanbod van wijnen.

History
Wine making has been part of Mallorca’s culture for centuries. It were the Romans who first brought wines to Mallorca, +/- 125years before Christ. Mallorca had around 27OOO hectare vineyard until the phylloxera plague came over the island and vineyards were replaced by almond orchards.
Thanks to tourists with great interest for quality wines, followed a resurgence of the vineyards. The combination of the chalky soil, the sea air and a great diversity in the landscape makes the wines of Mallorca have their own character.
Where Mallorca had some 30years ago only five wine companies, it now has become +/-65 wineries with more than 300 different wines.
There are three major wine regions in Mallorca:
1/ Binissalem
Binissalem is the best known wine region of the island. For red wine the following grape varieties are planted here: Manto Negro, Callet, Tempranillo, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. Moll, Parellada, Macabeo, Muscat and Chardonnay were planted for white wine.
To be able to use the quality label ‘Binissalem DO’ the red wine must contain at least 30% Manto Negro and at least 50% of Muscat or Moll for the whites.
About 75% of the wine production is red.
2/ Pla&Llevant
The wine region Pla and Llevant where the first wines were produced at the time of the Romans, is located in the east of the island; from Algaida to Felanitx to Arta.
For red wine the following grape varieties are planted here: Manto Negro, Callet, Fogoney, Tempranillo, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinot Noir and Merlot. For the white wine Premsal Blanc, Moll, Parellada, Macabeo, Muscat and Chardonnay has been planted.
In this region also semi-sparkling wines and spirits are produced.
3/ Tramuntana
The mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana offer the vineyards in this region a unique microclimate with unique quality wines as a result.
The most favorite grape varieties are Malvasia and Chardonnay for the whites. In addition, they also used Muscat, Moll, Parellada, Macabeo and Sauvignon Blanc. The red wines are made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Monastrell, Tempranillo Callet and Manto Negro.
Even though there is no official DO classification for this region, the quality is under strict control of the ‘Mallorca Regional Wine’ organization.
Bodegas
The wineries / bodegas are usually located on exceptionally beautiful locations. They are mainly small family businesses that grow grapes according to craft tradition. Due to the often intensive and manual production, winemakers go mainly for quality instead of quantity.
Did you know that about 90% of total wine production remains on the island of Mallorca? Only 10% is exported to the EU, of which more than half goes to Germany.
